An outstanding and rare, early 17th Century German Bartmann or Bellarmine jug.

Made from salt glazed stoneware, manufactured in Europe throughout the 16th and 17th centuries and would have been used for storing food and drinks or decanting wine.

The neck of the vessel carries the signature bearded man face mask detail and has a coat of arms below. This jug was reputedly sea trawled and could account for its preserved form.

Overall in excellent condition for an item with such age, no cracks, nibbles to the rim, loss from base and indent near the handle on one side.

Measurements: 21.5cm height x 13cm wide.
