Antique original Royal Exchange Insurance fire mark made from solid lead.

After the Great Fire of London in 1666 companies set up insurance protection. Mindful that few streets were named and the buildings were not numbered, some form of identification was necessary.

The first examples were made of lead, and some hundred years later followed by copper, tinned iron, zinc, brass and ceramic. They were attached to buildings by the insurance companies to mark that the building had been insured it for fire risks.

Measurements: 18cm height x 15.5cm wide.
